Doctor Strange #1 (June, 1974)

I have to confess, that as fond as I am of the comic that’s the subject of today’s blog post, I’ve always had a little trouble thinking of it as a “real” first issue.  After all, Doctor Strange had already had a first issue of his own solo title all the way back in 1968 — despite Marvel’s having opted at that time to continue the numbering of Doc’s previous home, the double-featured Strange Tales, by sticking a “#169” on it.  That solo series had run for fifteen issues before succumbing to cancellation in 1969, so no way was the comic book that showed up on stands in the middle of March, 1974, the actual first issue of Doctor Strange.  Heck, this wasn’t even the first issue of his current headlining feature, since that had begun a little less than two years previously, in Marvel Premiere #3.  The hero’s MP run had continued through issue #14 and then picked up here after only a three-month break; so, as far as I was concerned, Doctor Strange #1 was little more than the latest issue of the Sorcerer Supreme’s successfully revived solo series.  “Fabulous First Issue!”, my eye (of Agamotto).  Read More

Marvel Premiere #14 (March, 1974)

In December, 1973, the lead feature spot in Marvel Premiere was about to become vacant, as Doctor Strange’s 20-month, 12-issue tenancy as the publication’s headliner neared its end.  For the Master of the Mystic Arts — and his fans — it was a happy occasion, as he was about to return to starring in his very own title for the first time since 1969.

Though, of course, before the good Doctor could move into his new digs, he’d have to survive the third and final chapter of the storyline the series’ creative team of Steve Englehart (co-plotter/scripter) and Frank Brunner (co-plotter/artist) had initiated back in Marvel Premiere #12 — a storyline that presently found Strange and his arch-enemy, Baron Mordo, journeying backwards through time to the dawn of Creation, trailing a sorcerer from the far distant future named Sise-Neg (though, for reasons now unknown, the copy affixed to Brunner’s cover for issue #14 called him Cagliostro — the 18th-century mage Sise-Neg had impersonated in the previous issue).  Read More

Marvel Premiere #13 (January, 1974)

Back in August, we took a look at Marvel Premiere #12, featuring the initial chapter of a multi-part “Doctor Strange” adventure by the creative team of co-plotter/scripter Steve Englehart (joined for that single issue by co-scripter Mike Friedrich) and co-plotter/artist Frank Brunner.  Having begun their run on the feature half a year earlier by taking two issues to wrap up the extended “Shum-Gorath” storyline they’d inherited from their predecessors — and then following that up in Marvel Premiere #11 with a three-page framing sequence for a couple of classic Strange tales by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko — this was the first opportunity for Englehart and Brunner to show what kind of story they could come up with all on their own.

Man-Thing #1 (January, 1974)

In October, 1973, Marvel Comics’ muck-encrusted monstrosity, the Man-Thing — who’d first been introduced in the black-and-white Savage Tales #1 back in January, 1971, and had been holding down his own regular feature in Fear since July, 1972 — graduated into his own title at last.

But if anyone picked up this “Fear Fraught First Issue” expecting to get in on the ground floor of anything, they were likely disappointed once they turned past Frank Brunner’s excellent cover to find themselves smack dab in the middle of an ongoing storyline… and not exactly what you’d call a straightforward, uncomplicated storyline, either…  Read More

Marvel Premiere #12 (November, 1973)

In the summer of 1973, Marvel Comics decided to bring out an extra issue or two of a couple of their titles that normally came out only every two months.  I’m sure the thinking was that by doing so, they could capitalize on the fact of their mostly youthful audience having more time (and maybe more money) to spend on comic books while out of school, and you can’t really blame them.  But while the increase in frequency made all the sense in the world for a book like Defenders — which was then in the middle of a multi-issue, back-and-forth crossover with the always-monthly Avengers — it made somewhat less sense for the “Doctor Strange” solo vehicle, Marvel Premiere… if only because the publisher evidently got the idea for the “extra” issue too late to prepare a new story for it.

That would seem to be the simplest explanation for how, in the month of July, we got Marvel Premiere #11 — which, beneath a new cover by Frank Brunner, reprinted a couple of eight-page classics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko that had originally appeared way back in Strange Tales #115 (Dec., 1963) and #117 (Feb., 1964), with the only new interior content being a three-page framing sequence by Brunner and writer Steve Englehart.  Hey, d’you think maybe Marvel was just trying to pry every dime they could out of faithful fans like your humble blogger?  Read More

Fear #17 (October, 1973)

By the time Steve Gerber sat down to write the story that we’ll be looking at today, he was pretty well established at Marvel Comics.  While it’s true that an early stint working on staff as a proofreader didn’t turn out all that great, due to the twenty-five-year-old former advertising copywriter’s propensity for falling asleep at his desk (many years later, Gerber would be diagnosed with sleep apnea), his freelance writing gig was going very well, thank you.  As of late spring, 1973, Gerber was the regular writer for Daredevil, Sub-Mariner, the Zombie (in Tales of the Zombie), and — last but not least — the gig with which he’d started out, almost a year before: the Man-Thing series in Fear.  Not only that, but in just two months, that latter assignment would provide the launchpad for the character for which he’d ultimately be best remembered, Howard the Duck.

But it all almost came crashing down in the middle of ’73, thanks to Gerber’s introduction of another, less well-remembered character in the pages of that same series — a character whose unmistakable similarity to the flagship superhero of Marvel’s number one competitor, though intended as parody, wasn’t at all well received by that competitor — resulting in the young writer coming very, very close to being fired.  Read More

Savage Tales #2 (October, 1973)

As I’ve noted in previous posts, Marvel Comics’ Savage Tales #1 — the company’s second attempt to break into the black-and-white comics magazine market, following Spectacular Spider-Man (or, if you prefer, its third, following Pussycat; or even the fourth, if you want to go all the way back to 1955’s Mad knock-off, Snafu) passed my then-thirteen-year-old self by upon its January, 1971 release.  Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I passed it by.  I was doubtless aware of it, since it had been plugged in Marvel’s Bullpen Bulletins columns; but, at the time, I hadn’t dared to take so much as a peek at the “mature” black-and-white offerings then available on the magazine racks (my first Warren Publishing purchase wouldn’t happen until that summer) — unless you counted Mad, which I didn’t.  Plus, I hadn’t even sampled the adventures of Savage Tales‘ headliner, Conan the Barbarian, in his titular Comics Code-approved color series yet (my first issue of that book would be #4 — which, as it happens, came out just one week after Savage Tales #1).  But even if I had been inclined to give the new magazine a try, I would likely have been too intimidated by the “mature” cover painting by John Buscema (not to mention the big “M” label positioned adjacent to that painting’s bloodily severed head) to risk sneaking it into my very Southern Baptist household.  Read More

Marvel Premiere #10 (September, 1973)

Two months ago we covered Marvel Premiere #9, the inaugural issue of writer Steve Englehart and artist Frank Brunner’s celebrated run on Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts.  This time, we’ll be taking a look at that creative team’s second outing, one which may be considered almost as significant as the first, for at least three reasons.

The first is that this issue concluded the extended saga that had kicked off over a year earlier in Marvel Premiere #3, which had featured the first new full-length solo adventure of Dr. Strange since the cancellation of his title back in 1969.  The second is that after a couple of efforts from undeniably talented inkers whose styles nevertheless weren’t entirely harmonious with his own, Frank Brunner finally found the perfect embellisher(s) for his pencils on the series here, in the amorphous assortment of artists identified on MP #10’s opening splash page as “the Singing Sons of the Crusty Bunkers”:  Read More

Marvel Premiere #9 (July, 1973)

For artist Frank Brunner and Marvel Comics’ Doctor Strange, the third time around would prove to be the proverbial charm.

As we’ve covered in previous posts, Brunner first brush with the Dr. Strange feature came with Marvel Premiere #4, for which he supplied finishes to pencilled art (mostly just layouts) by Barry Windsor-Smith.  He returned four months later with Marvel Premiere #6, where his complete pencils were inked by Sal Buscema.  But unhappy with writer Gardner Fox’s scripts, as well as with the overall H.P. Lovecraft-by-way-of-Robert E. Howard “cosmic horror” direction of the series (a direction we should note had been inaugurated by plotter-editor Roy Thomas in issue #4, and then continued by Fox), the young artist left again after only a single issue.  Read More

Marvel Premiere #8 (May, 1973)

Last April, we took a look at Marvel Premiere #3 (Jul., 1972), which featured Doctor Strange starring in his first full-length solo adventure since the cancellation of his title back in 1969.  In this issue, artist Barry Windsor-Smith and scripter Stan Lee introduced a mysterious new adversary for the Master of the Mystic Arts — a menace who was powerful enough to suborn one of the Doc’s oldest and most formidable foes, Nightmare, but who remained yet nameless and unseen at the episode’s conclusion.

More clues were forthcoming in the following bi-monthly issue, which we covered here last June.  This one was drawn by Windsor-Smith in collaboration with relative newcomer Frank Brunner, while Archie Goodwin scripted from a plot by Roy Thomas; it saw the storyline take a turn towards cosmic horror, as Dr. Strange journeyed to the New England village of Starkesboro, whose half-human, half-reptilian inhabitants secretly worshiped the demonic entity Sligguth.  However, Sligguth himself was no more than another servant of the same dark threat that our hero had first learned of in MP #3 — a threat that still remained nameless in this installment, though we at least learned a bit more about him — mostly courtesy of Doc’s mentor, the venerable Ancient One, who warned of the imminent return of “a cosmic obscenity that slumbers”.  The issue ended on a cliffhanger, with Strange shackled to a stone altar, about to be sacrificed to Sligguth by the demon’s scaly celebrants:  Read More
